Even though my friend is all wet about not being able to follow my
instructions for recording a macro, this got me to wondering what the primary
differences are between Word 2003 and XP? Anything compelling enough to
upgrade soon? Thanks!

No compelling reasons that I know of. Word 2003 is better than Word 2002 but
not to the extent of spending money. If your friend has a specific problem
in Word 2002 (other than not spending the time to learn how to use it) check
to see if that has been fixed in Word 2003.

See http://www.microsoft.com/office/editions/prodinfo/compare.mspx. Many of
the enhancements in Word 2003 are of more interest to large corporate users
or to developers. One great improvement, however, is in the Track Changes
feature, where functionality lost in Word 2002 has been restored.
