What are the benefits to repairing the operating system?

When you choose the second repair option from the install
disk, what specifically does it do? I know it leaves data
intact and replaces some of the OS files, etc. But what
does it do to the registry and the OS files? And what are
the benefits to repairing the OS?

Let's use Win2K for an example.

We have several repair options for Windows 2000 (manual, fast, in-place
upgrade, etc.).
