Dana

I was deleting a bunch of unused programs on my computer
when I came across a list of about 20-25 programs
labelled "Windows XP Hotfix (SP2)". I don't know what
these are and I can't seem to find the right information.
I figure if there are this many on my drive, they could
be taking up quite a bit of space. Can anyone tell me
what they are, and if they are safe to delete?

Dana, these are security updates that have either been installed on your
computer through Automatic Updates or from Windowsupdate.microsoft.com. I
would suggest not uninstalling them (from Add/Remove Programs) as they are
protecting your computer from things such as the Blaster worm.

Hotfixes" are the updates you installed from the Windows Update
website. Do not be tempted to remove them or you will uninstall
the actual updates.

If you wish to safely remove the "uninstall files" for the
Hotfixes (i.e. $NtUninstallQxxxxxx$ files shown in Windows Explorer)
and cleanup your Add/Remove Programs list, visit MS-MVP Doug Knox's
excellent website for instructions.

Note: Doug's program only removes the uninstall files and Hotfix entries
in the Add/Remove Programs listing. It does not remove the
actual updates.

Remove Hotfix Backup files and the Add/Remove Programs Registry entries
