I'd pop along to M$ updates so all is up to date and maybe sp2 is
required.

Applications I always have on my OS are:
Maxthon (browser)
Irfanview (Image Viewer)
Winamp (mp3 media player)
Xnews (newsreader)
DivX Player (video player)
Shareaza (p2p filesharing client)
Disk Cleaner (hd cleanup utility)
EAC - Exact Audio Copy (CD Ripper)
Geminisoft Pimmy (email and or news client)
Agnitum Outpost FREE (firewall)
Anti-virus (I use Kaspersky but it's not free).
Ad-Aware and or Spybot - Search & Destroy (adware and spyware
detection).
Real Player and Windows Media Player
.... etc.

If it's a new new pc it should come with a cd/dvd writer software but if
not check out http://SnapFiles.com/Freeware

=== first install a good firewall and anti-virus (I use Zonealarm and
AVG) , then it depends on what he wants to do , I have some listed at
my site.. http://www.nonags.org/members/mike555/ ==========

In order for your friend to access all the features of OpenOffice.org,
you'll need to install Sun Microsystem's Java Runtime:

http://java.com/en/

Be sure though, that you disable Java in all browsers installed on the
system. Otherwise it will expose your friend to security vulnerabilities.

They keep moving PGP around (from MIT, to PGP, to GNU, etc.) so I'm not
sure WHICH PGP is the preferred site for both commercial and non
commercial windows users in the usa and beyond the americas - but it's
got to be one of these below.
