Welcome Screen on resume

For some eason, my computer just stopped going idle. The screen used to go
dark afetr about 20 min, and if I moved the mouse it would come back to the
Welcome Screen for a password. I want to get back to that.

I recently upgarded to SP-2, but I don't think that's the problem. I don't
want to go into Standby mode. I don't think I was using Screen Saver to do
this, but I tried that anyway. The only option on resume is for the password
screen, not the Welcome Screen (but I notice that my son's computer, in the
same spot, has an option for the Welcome Screen, not the password screen!).

Try enabling the "Welcome Screen" and possibly "Fast User Switching" (?)
via

Control Panel > User Accounts > "Change the way users log on of off"

Jon

It seems now I can get it to go to screen saver and require a password to
resume, but only on a password screen, not the Welcome Screen...

A couple of other things to check.....

Check that both of these Services are on manual or automatic (ie not
disabled)
via Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services

Terminal Services
Fast User Switching

Check BOTH boxes for enabling Fast User Switching and the Welcome screen as
suggested previously (via Control Panel > User Accounts > Change....)

If you're using XP Pro,
try opening "My Computer" > Tools > Folder Options > Offline Files
and unchecking "Enable Offline Files"

Also perhaps have a look at your Power Options settings via Control Panel >
Power Options. Perhaps you have a power setting to turn off the monitor
prior to the screen saver.
ie set "Turn off monitor" to never

Jon

Strange

Try this setting

Control Panel > Power Options > Advanced > Clear "Prompt for password when
the computer resumes from standby"

Also
Control Panel > Power Options > Power Schemes tab > Set "System Standby" to
never > Apply

If that doesn't do the trick then a couple of questions

Are you using an Administrator level account when applying the changes? ie
not a limited one [temporarily change the account level via another
administrative account if not]

Is it a standalone computer or connected to a domain? [won't work for
domains]

If you press Start > "log off", does an option to "switch user" appear? [if
not there's a problem with fast user switching] [pressing the windows key
(between ctrl and alt keys) and L should take you to the welcome screen,
with "fast user switching" and the "welcome screen" enabled in control
panel ]

Jon

Thank you for answering again, Jon.

I made all the changes. I am on an admin level password. I do get a "Switch
User" option if I go Start>Log Off.

But I still get a password prompt (old style) on resume from screen saver,
not a new XP Welcome Screen. And on Control Panel>Display>Screen Saver, my
check box option is for a password prompt, not for a welcome screen. My son's
XP Home computer, on the same place, has a check box for a Welcome Screen.
And a week ago, I am telling you, I too got a Welcome Screen on resume.

What I have now works, but it is not what I want, and not the option I
expect to see. Somewhere else, somewhere, something (maybe from the XP SP-2
patch, but then again, my son has applied the same SP-2 patch) somewhere
something is telling my machine to only present the password screen option on
the Screen Saver tab.

If yours is the only account on the computer, then one thing to try might be
to (temporarily, perhaps) set up a second admin account on the system -
firstly to check whether that makes a difference to the original account,
and secondly to see whether the same problem occurs in the new account or
not.

Another option might be to use one of the standard screensavers, if you're
using a custom one and see if that makes a difference.

Yes, I also encountered this same exact scenario.
Same version XPpro on the same PC but 2 different
outcomes on 2 separate occasions.

Before, I had only the windows default "Adminstrator"
account on (no other users added), and the "On resume,
display welcome screen" option is there.

Due to crashes, I had to do a reinstall (same version)
but was forced to add a new user account during install.
Welcome screen hides the "Admin" account, shows my user
account but display properties had "On resume, password
protect" option.

Jon, your first suggestion does work. Just by having a
2nd user appear on the welcome screen gives the
option "On resume, display welcome screen". This is also
possible using TweakUI to force the
default "Administrator" appear on welcome screen in
addition to a user account. So long as 2 names appear on
the welcome screen, the option will surely be available.

But I'm curious how my first install could have only the
default "Adminstrator" and also the "display welcome
screen" available as well.

I've seen a similar post with regards to SP2 as well. But
here I'm getting the issue on SP1 so I doubt its anything
to do with SP2.

Hmm, if there aren't any solution, we just had to create
a dummy user account to force that option. Or maybe
having the guest account turned on will work as well.

Thanks for your response Melvin.

Another alternative to the creation of a dummy account method, might be to
add a registry key of name "Administrator" (with a value of DWORD 1), to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\SpecialAccounts\UserList

Administrator
(type DWORD, value = 1)

This would also make the Administrator account visible in "User Accounts" eg
for password changing purposes

Whether you get Welcome or the older password screen is a separate
matter: in Control Panel, User Accounts, click 'change way users log on'
and then Use Welcome screen (or not)

The setting you want is at Display - Screensaver. You may be using the
Blank screensaver; the setting for going back to logon is next to it 'On
resume password protect'

There is another one in Power Options (Advanced page) related to logon
