Welcome Screen doesn't work

When I click on a user name on the Welcome Screen I get a blank blue
screen and then the system comes back and displays the Welcome Screen
again. Fortunately one of the user names still works, but all the
others behave as described above. I tried deleting one of the accounts
and then adding a new one - but no luck. The same behavior.
