I have written this out 3 times now, so forgive the short
explanation:

In Win Xp Pro, the welcome screen says I have an unread
message, but I actually don't. How do I stop it from
saying this, and prevent it from returning in the future?

It sounds like you have multiple email accounts in your Outlook client. In Outlook, go to Tools, Options, Hit the Mail Setup Tab, then the email accounts button.

Delete any old email accounts you no longer use.

I'm not sure if you can turn that off...

Also, did you install MSN messenger or Windows Messenger and have a hotmail
email account?

If so, check your hotmail email account to see if there are new emails.
Also check messenger settings to see if it is auto logged in upon windows
starts up? If so, turned it off.

The notification may come from messenger and indicates your hotmail account.

Hi,

Download and install TweakUi for Windows XP from the link below. Once
installed open the program and goto Repair>>Select Unread Mail Account.

I'll try downloading TweakUI and stuff.

Yes I have a hotmail account - it's the only e-mail
account I have. Outlook is used to access my hotmail as
well. I don't have any other e-mail accounts I don't think.

Use TweakUI - one of the XP Powertoys from (if you have installed XP
SP1)
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp

If you have not installed SP1, the earlier version can be found at
http://download.microsoft.com/download/whistler/Install/2/WXP/EN-US/TweakUiPowertoySetup.exe

Once installed you will find it in Start - All Programs - Powertoys for
Windows XP

Its Repair page includes 'Repair Unread MAil COunt'
Its 'Logon' - Unread Mail page allows you to turn the facility off
altogether

Hi,
you could download a handy little utility called TweakUI, part of
Microsoft PowerToys.Once you've installed the program, open TweakUI and
select the "Logon" item from the task list.

If all you want is to eliminate the unread e-mail notice from the
Welcome screen, click Unread Mail and remove the check mark from the
appropriate box. If there are multiple users for your computer, you can
apply the change to any or all of them.
