Weird USB problem

Any help here would be much appreciated. I have a P4 3Ghz running fully
patched XP pro. Last Friday my system was all working fine. At that time it
had a USB printer, USB web cam a powered external USB hardrive and I also
have a 256mb USB memory stick. All these devices worked fine.

On Saturday I installed a Belkin F5u22 high speed DVD creator (basically a
device that shows up on the system as a digital camera). All day Saturday
and most of Sunday I worked importing some old VHS home movies and burning
them to DVD. When finished I unplugged this device and packed it away.

On Monday I found another tape and thought I would copy that too but when I
plugged in the device I get a message that says "USB Device not recognized"
turns out that my external hard drive is the same and my memory stick but
the printer and camera are OK.

Does anyone know aht has happened here and how to fix it?

Thanks

Geoff.

OK,

I have made some progress but still need help here. If I go into my BIOS and
disable USB 2.0 Support memory stick and hard drive connect with error (they
give a warning saying hi speed device connected to low speed hub).

So this problem has to be something to do with XP USB 2.0 drivers on my
system. Perhaps they have been overwritten or corrupted in some way.

Questions...

1. Does anything I'm saying here and previous post make sense to anyone
at all?
2. If it does can it be fixed?

I could do a rebuild but that wont help me if it happens again. I cant be
the only person to have this issue.

Thanks in anticipation.

Geoff.

Did you try all of these devices in all of the ports? Does the printer
work in ports that the others don't? You can try installing different
USB 2.0 drivers by updating your chipset drivers. If you need help with
that, let me know. USB 1.1 and USB 2.0 are completely separate in the
chipset, so it is possible that the USB 2.0 part is having problems
while the USB 1.1 part is working fine. I doubt this is the case as I
am betting that it was whatever drivers that digital camera installed.
Did you reboot after you installed that digital camera?

I wonder if maybe that digital camera thing installed its own USB 2.0
drivers, but worked fine off the existing ones and didn't finish
installing them until you rebooted.

Thanks Nathan,

I have tried all devices in all ports and yes I did re boot after install of
Camera. I have now read on usbman site that the SiS 7001 chipset is well
known for USB 2 issues and on their advice have purchased a seperate USB PCI
card. All issues now fixed £35.00 well spent.

Its odd that if I provide someone with a product that does not work as
specified I have to fix it or refund them the money but in the world of the
PC its seems quite acceptable!

Thanks

Geoff

It's sad isn't it? Bummer you had to go through all that trouble, but
glad to hear you got it working alright :)
