I have wireless networking with router between laptop and desktop. I am
able to connect to the internet, and that is all. I've tried various
offers on how to get my share files and folders to work, but at this
stage..it would take a miracle. I've disabled/enabled Firewall...same
negatively. I tried pinging and on one I get a very fast screen which
disappears quickly, after I spotted Reply...etc 3 times. On the other I
get the typical Timed out. I had no problem prior to this with my
ethernet connections. Why does wireless make it more difficult? BTW, I
still see Shared Documents in windows explorer, but those were related
to my ethernet connection. I have XP home on both with SP2. One person
suggested that I go to Tools/folder options in windows explorer and
showed me what I should see...It does not look like the box that I see
when I go there...why should there be a difference...unless he/she is
talking based on their XP version..perhaps...XP Pro?

Even if the answer is Yes to the firewall question, the reality might still
be no. :-) Having just come out of the experience of installing and
reinstalling a 3rd party firewall 3 times but only one of those times did
the LAN zone actually allow LAN traffic without my having to make specific
exceptions to allow LAN IPs to connect with my computer. Sometimes loopback
and broadcast communications have also been silently blocked by firewalls.

Tony,

No response received from pinging is a low level (rather basic) problem, which
may or may not have the same cause as the file sharing problem.

So welcome to computer networking - very simple when things go right, but 100
ways for things to NOT go right. You have to fix each of the 100 things.

Start by reading about how to solve network problems.

And when you ping, use a command window, don't ping from the Run command.

Now, please describe the WiFi involvement here - can you connect both computers
by Ethernet first? The router make and model might be useful here too.

And if you don't have a WiFi connectivity issue, one of the most common causes
of this problem would be a misconfigured or overlooked personal firewall, or
other security component. There are several other possibilities too, and any
might be the cause of your problem. Read this article with an open mind.
