Does anyone know of a freeware tool to convert Outlook Express 6.x files to
Outlook 97? Address book, mailboxes, settings, etc.

Thanks.

IIRC, you should be able to import the mail and settings from within
Outlook. Check File | Import and Export...

I looked there. No import from Outlook Express. Funny stuff. I can make a
delimited file from the address book, but nothing to import mailboxes,
settings, etc.

I can't even find where to set up my pop3 server. Can it be that Outlook 97
didn't support pop access???

Are there options to "Import Internet Mail and Addresses" or Import
Internet Mail Settings"? It's been a while since I've used '97, and I'm
looking at a copy of Office XP. The mail settings import runs a wizard
that allows you to import all your settings from OE. The mail and
addresses import lets you import mail from OE.

As far as setting up the pop account manually, it's necessary to go to
the Control Panel and double-click Mail. The E-mail accounts wizard
will step you through setting up the account.

If none of this information is usable, try asking at the
microsoft.public.outlook newsgroup.

I think the way I did it (if I can recal) was exporting from OE into another
format (something to do with the old format ms fax had on win98 I think) and
then importing the messages using that.

Tip: if you have emule download outlook98 (wich was a free release from
microsoft, that they pulled from their servers after some time):

this is the ed2k link for using with emule:

There are import options, but OE is not one of them. They covered Act!,
Ecco, etc., but not their own product. Go figure.

Alas, Outlook 97 does not have that option. No wizard to set up a new
account. Sigh.

Yup, already did that. They couldn't help.

Oh well.

Thanks so much for the try.

Sheesh, you guys are gonna kill me. I downloaded e-mule, and can't figure
out how to indicate what file I want to transfer.

I am truly dumb.

Take a look at the following KB articles. It appears that you can
export from OE to Outlook 97. I didn't consider that alternative. ;)
KB254067 steps through setting up a POP3 account in Outlook 97.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;175715

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;262475

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;254067

Step one of the instructions in the third link states:

How to Add a New E-mail Account to Your Existing Profile in Outlook 97
1. On the Tools menu, click Services, click Add, and then click
Internet E-mail.

Sheesh. I'm already dead. "Internet E-mail" does not appear as an option.

I think I'll just give up. Nothing seems to make sense.

Thanks so much for trying.

Incidentally, I was out shopping today and found a copy of Outlook 98 for
sale for three bucks at a thrift store. I snatched it up, tried to install
it, and alas, no CD key available, nowhere on the case. Someone must have
peeled it off. I know this is not entirely kosher, but since it was a free
update anyway, I thought I'd give it a try.

Thanks to all.

you have 2 options, either to start emule and search for the keyword
OUTLOOK98 (just as I wrote it with the number 98 after the word outlook
with no space) and amoung the results you should choose the one that is
around 128 mb ,

Or you can press the TOOLS button on the emule button and select the paste
ed2k option and paste this text inside:

ed2k://|file|Ms,%20Outlook%2098%20Cd-Outlook98.rar|134769304|5C84623593387CE19BACF587466D494A|/

and then press download.

If you still cant figure it out tell me an email and I will give you a link
towards the file.

Thanks so much, I'll give it a try.

Best.
