I have bought a new DVD burner from Pioneer. It works
under Nero, but not on it's own. I went into services and
saw that the internal XP burning service was shutdown. I
have restarted it and set it to automatic. I would like to
know how I can burn CD's without going to Nero.

Open My Computer, then right click on the drive in question, then choose properties. After that, click on the Recording tab, then check the box "Enable CD recording on this drive". Click "apply", and OK" as needed.

You must use Nero or some other third party program, as XP
says, it is CD burning.

I don't know why you replied to me, but you are wrong on this. You can to burn CDs (obviously not DVDs) with XPs builtin writer. A DVD burner can do either. I have Nero 6 Ultra Edition, and I have both a DVD burner, and a CD-RW burner (dual drives). I can burn CDs in the DVD drive if I have it setup as I stated to the OP to do, using XP's builtin system. But I obviously use my software, because it is better.

I replied to the thread, not to you and my comments were
intended for the OP. I assumed that was obvious.
XPs built-in software burning program only supports CD-R.
To burn a CD-RW with packet writing you need third-party
software. All DVD burning requires third-party. The DVD -R
drive can use the XP software to burn a CD.

Your last sentence is the key, third-party software is
better (easier, more flexible to use.)

No Jim, you replied to me, as I was in the previous header, not the OP; this is why top posting sucks, I do it to be congruent with the replies. You obviously DO NOT read at all. He said nothing about packet writing, simply that he couldn't burn to CDs (whether its R or RW in this case doesn't matter!) using XPs software, that he would like to do burning (not packet writing) without having to go through Nero.

Also, XPs burning software supports burning to CD-RWs too, not just CDRs, as one can erase a disk using the XP software. XP just doesn't do DVDs and packet writing natively.

Boy, we said the same things, basically, you're just kind of
touchy.

Not touchy at all, and you didn't at all say the same thing as I did. You specifically stated that XPs built-in burner only supports CDRs, which is wrong, it also supports CDRWs. You then went on to mention CDRWs and the need for packet writing, which isn't anything close to what the OP asked. I gave the solution for him to burn from his DVD-RW drive by making changes to the properties of that drive from within XP.
