I have 2 HD's in my box... C & D , have had for months running XP no
problem

for some reason this morning, xp decided that yes there is a D drive,
but it needs to be formatted....

I take the D drive out and plug it into another machine (Win98) and
everything is fine....

ideas?

TIA

Could you explain exactly what happened and what showed on the screen, etc?
Windows should not, by default, ever try to automatically format anything.

Everything was working fine. This is not a new physical or logical
drive, it has been there working properly for months. It is a 60gb WD
Caviar drive with no partitions...all 60 is the D drive

Today I went to open a program that reffered to the D drive and I got
an error message.(file doesn't exist) Upon further examination, XP
sees the drive (but gives no size) when I click on properties it tells
me that the disk is not formatted and would I like to format now...

I took the drive out of the XP machine and put in in a W98 machine and
all the data is there (although W98 splits it D&E)

I'm in the process now of burning CDs full of data and barring a
solution to the problem, will be formatting the D drive once it is
back in my XP machine.

I have a gnawing feeling that won't be the end of the story
however....

TIA

Bob
