Weird noises and jumpy screen

Lately the computer makes a weird clunking sound. When I log in to XP by
clicking on my user profile, the windows music is all choppy. Also, when
trying to play games online, the connection seems choppy too. Where do I
start to try to fix this?

Is it a sort of rythmic thumping/clunking? If so, I would probably say
your HDD is bad :P At least working tech support for emachines that was the
top problem with that sound.... anyone else have ideas? I recommend a new
HDD.
 
That's not cool- this drive is barely a year old. What should I back up on
discs in case it completely dies?
