weird monitor problems

every time i switch my pc it boots up, gets to the welcome screen then goes
off, it works fine with an old computer running windows 98. im currentley on
windows xp. the monitor im using on my windows xp is an old NEC multisync
4fg, this one is ok but tiny and on its way out. thanks in advance.
 
Right click on the desktop>Properties>Configuration>Advanced Options>Monitor and decrease the frequency.
 
meant to say, when i connect the monitor to the old windows 98 pc and leave
it for a while, then quickly attach it to the windows xp sometimes it stays
on, but lately it wont stay on at all.
when i click desktop i dont get configuration, just properties, then themes,
desktop, screen saver, appearance and settings. ive tried the screen
resolutions if thats what you mean it didnt work. :( thanks
 
Right click>Properties>Settings tab>Advanced options, so on.

do you mean the hertz? or the refresh rate? sorry im not any good yet with
pcs im just learning. i tried changing the refresh rate in the past, the
hertz is 75 if thats any good to you. thank you again.
 
Try first to decrease the refresh rate.
