Sorry about the repost but my original post got pushed to
the 5th page pretty quickly so I thought I'd try again. If
there is a better way to do this, please let me know...

I don't know what's going on. I wasn't doing anything on my
computer (was washing the dishes) and heard an error
message pop up on my computer. I didn't see what it was and
thought I'd check it when I was done. Next thing I know,
the computer reboots by itself and now, whenever I start
the thing up, I get a messageless error. All it shows is a
dialog box with and "x" error symbol and no text
whatsoever. My Norton AV detected no viruses and the
computer seems to be running fine otherwise.

Any idea what's happening?

I don't know how to solve your original problem, but you can get more
out of newsgroups by using a newsreader program. Outlook Express works
fairly well. Here's a quick way to get started.

Copy the following line and paste it into the Internet Explorer address
bar. Then click GO.

news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.windowxp.general

This operation will cause a newsreader program to open on your computer.
You may be prompted to enter your name and email address. If you are
asked if you want to download groups from the server, do so. It will
only take a couple of minutes, even on dialup.

With OE, newsgroups work just like email. Double cliek a subject line
to read the message. Just as in the web-based version, clicking the
plus sign next to a message expands the thread. In the message window,
the Next button takes you to the next message in an expanded thread, or
the next thread.
