Hi, this is my first post and I was hoping that someone could help. My
friend the other day installed a program that caused him to lose all of his
excel files. Fortunately, he was able to do a system restore and was able to
retrieve the files that were lost. However, upon opening them the files were
filled with these weird script codes. Is there a way to fix the file so that
information is displayed correctly in excel when it is opened?

Hi
you may provide some more details:
- what program did your friend install
- How did he do a 'system restore'
- examples for this 'weird' code

I'm with Frank on this.

First, I doubt the files were lost.

Second, a regular Windows OS "system restore" would not restore data files in
the event they became wiped.

Perhaps the file association was messed up and your friend is opening the
files with a program other than Excel, which could result in the weird
characters.

Brian,

If you haven't already done so, you should open the files in Excel with
File - Open (instead of double-clicking them from a file list or folder).
You need to know where they are (My Documents, etc). If that works, and
double-clicking them doesn't, then look to see which program starts when you
double-click a file. It sounds as if it's something other than Excel. If
that's the case, the other program hijacked the xls file association (which
you can restore). Software is a den of thieves! :)
