Weird behavior in start menu

When I click on the IE icon in the start menu I get the error message 'This
file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action.
Create an association in the Folder Options Control Panel.' I am then given
the option of removing the item from the list. However, IE opens normally if
I click on its icon in the relevant program directory.

I reinstalled IE without restoring the correct start menu behavior. Has
anyone any idea what is going on?

Walt;

Right click the IE icon on the Start Menu | Properties

Do you get a Internet Explorer Properties window?
On the Shortcut tab | click the Find Target button
"C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE" ??
===========
This will put a shortcut to IE on your Desktop.

Right click the Desktop | Properties | Desktop tab |
Customize button | Check: Internet Explorer |
OK | Apply | OK

No, I don't! That's the strange thing. I get a menu with the items 'Browse
the Internet' (which produces the behavior described below) 'Internet
Properties' and 'Remove from this list'. Your suggestion for putting a
shortcut on the Desktop works, but the odd behavior of the item in the Start
menu is replicated in my wife's account, for example. How can I restore
normal behavior?

Try this.
Right click the IE shortcut on the Start Menu | Delete | Yes |
Right click the IE shortcut on the Desktop | Create Shortcut |
Right click the Start button | Explore All Users | Click the +
next to Programs | Highlight Accessories | Size (or move)
the window so you can see the IE shortcut you made |
Left click the IE shortcut and drag it into the right hand pane |
Start | All Programs | Accesories | Right click | Sort by name
