is there a website where I download manually Windows XP
system updates without going through the Automatic Update
website?
In order to aviod any attack while when getting the
updates automatically via the microsoft website.

correct, however you can just download each file via the
windows update catalog. goto windows update, do a scan,
make a note of all the update numbers eg: 820291 then goto
personalize windows update on the left -> check the box
display the link to the windows update catalog under see
also -> save settings -> goto -> windows update catalog on
the left -> find updates for microsoft windows operating
systems -> select the os and language -> search -> select
the required category -> add all the noted patches and
then go to download basket -> browse to a folder to save
the patches -> download now. the files will be downloaded.
you can then deploy to many pcs offline.

goto
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/servicepac
ks/sp1/default.asp and get the network version of service
pack 1 first though.

btw i have recently made a cd with all the (2k and xp)
updates for a friend who has limited internet access, with
a few simple batch files for quick hassle free install. i
could send you a copy of the cd if you email an address to
send to. all files are digitally signed by microsoft to
prevent tampering.

It is not where on the Microsoft web services that you go for
the downloads, but how you do it, that will keep you safe.

You can use the Windows Catalog feature at Windows Update,
or you can look up the individual KB numbers with
support.microsoft.com/?id=KB where you replace the
KB with the number for the KB article, as these very often
have download links, or you can go to microsoft.com/downloads
and search, or to microsoft.com/technet/security and follow links
in the Security Bulletin, etc.

Whether you use one of these manual methods or automatic updates,
the result is the same - you are equally exposed on the network.
The most direct thing to do is to enable your firewal and let the
automatic updates feature locate the patches for you. If you run
in a way that you are vulnerable to attacks while visiting automatic
updates, you will be equally vulnerable while using a manual method.
Just turn on the built-in firewall and do not do any email or websurfing
while your system is not up-to-date on patches.

thank you Roger.

without going through the Automatic Update website?

if you download the standard web installer it will require
a connection to windowsupdate to download the rest of the
data. if you download the network version - that _is_
service pack 1, you do not need an internet connection to
fully install it.
