Since the OS is Vista it's best to post to a Vista newsgroup. This one is
for the XP OS. Here is a list of Vista newsgroups on the MS server.

microsoft.public.windows.vista.administration_accounts_password
microsoft.public.windows.vista.file_management
microsoft.public.windows.vista.games
microsoft.public.windows.vista.general
microsoft.public.windows.vista.hardware_assessment
microsoft.public.windows.vista.hardware_devices
microsoft.public.windows.vista.installation_setup
microsoft.public.windows.vista.mail
microsoft.public.windows.vista.music_pictures_video
microsoft.public.windows.vista.networking_sharing
microsoft.public.windows.vista.performance_maintenance
microsoft.public.windows.vista.print_fax_scan
microsoft.public.windows.vista.security

TO OP:
our resident net nanny roxanne, knows as well as anyone else. just would prefer you to not get an answer because it disapproves of where you are posting to.

you would need to locate a VISTA approved driver for the web cam.
first check would be the HP web site.

and yes there are vista news groups. but I see no reason do deprive someone of an answer just because of news group posted in.

It's not at all a matter of "depriving" someone of an answer. There
are two reasons why it's important to post in a newsgroup that's
specific to your question:

1. The right newsgroup is where the experts in that technology hang
out, and the person asking the question is much more likely to get the
answer he needs there. Even if he gets an answer in the wrong
newsgroup, the answer isn't as subject to the same quality peer review
as it would get in the correct group, so it's possible that a wrong
answer could go uncorrected.

2. It's no different from spam or any other kind of off-topic posting.
If newsgroups get cluttered with off-topic messages, the volume of
messages goes up and it gets harder for people (especially those using
the awful web-based interface) to find the answers to their on-topic
questions and the help they need.

its fine to redirect someone to a better group, but provide an answer FIRST.
as I have said time and time again.
to do otherwise is rude, discourteous, UNHELPFUL.

And reward the dummies for posting blindly in any ol' group without
doing some basic research beforehand?

NO WAY.

I would rather be re-directed to a group designed to answer my specific question
on a specific area of concern.

Having someone being "helpful" when they may not have the exact knowledge of
that area of concern could be detrimental.

You've said it time and time again, and you've been wrong time and
time again. Not everyone is an expert in all technologies, and
*nobody* can answer every question. If I don't know the answer to
someone's question, but I can courteously point him to someplace else
where he can get the right answer, that *is* being helpful.

and have the same person that told you to go elsewhere give you the answer anyway.
counter productive.
and a waste of time.

NO I am not wrong, because time and time again he has told people to go elsewhere and ends up answering their question in the other news groups.
counter productive and a TOTAL waste of time.

for some reason this RUDE behavior started several months ago when some NEW people started answering questions.
is this a result of the summit meeting and some creative seminars.
