Is there any simple software which will enable me to view my webcam in a
small window on my screen. I just want to watch my front door from my study
and the software supplied with the web cam is too complicated. Ideally it
should sit on the toolbar all the time and be able to be brought up when
someone rings at the door.

Sure is....do a google for a program called Pryme - you might find it
here:

http://www.hilo.dk/pryme/

It comes with motion detection - which is a great feature, though I
have found the program to be a tad unstable on some machines.
It pays to ensure the frame rate is set to 15.
