I use the Web based newsreader to view these posts. For the past two days
I've been having a problem. When I try to mark a post "Notify me of replies",
it says "Notification failed. Please try later."

Can someone who uses the Web based newsreader please try marking a post
"Notify me of replies" and let me know if the problem is with Microsoft's
server or with my computer?

Thanks,
Milt

Gordon,

Thanks for the quick reply. No, I'm not behind a corporate firewall. I'm a
home user. I do use Windows software firewall and a Netgear router/gateway
with it's hardware firewall. But nothing has changed with either of these.
I've never had a problem until about two days ago. And even though posts I
create give me an error message, they do get marked and the notification is
enabled. But posts that I read but do not originate do not get marked or
enabled to send notifications.

I sometimes use the NNTP Newsreader, but I prefer the Web based reader. It's
more convenient for me. And, as I said above, I've never had any problem.

I suspect the problem is not at this end. But I won't know unless someone
else tries it and lets me know if they have a problem too. I have tried
another computer at this location and it shows the same problem. It doesn't
use the windows firewall but goes through the same Netgear router.

Gordon,

Thanks for the quick reply. I am not behind a corporate firewall. And I've
never had a problem until yesterday. I do use Windows XP software firewall
and a Netgear hardware router/firewall. Posts I originate do get enabled,
even though they show the error message. But posts that I read and then mark
for notification do not get marked for notification. I just get the error
message. The same thing happens on another computer here which uses Windows
ME and does not have a software firewall. Up until yesterday I've never had a
problem. And no settings of either firewall have been changed.

That's why I would like someone using the Web based reader to check a post
and see if they have the same problem.

I'm familiar with the NNTP reader. I only use it when I need to upload or
download an attachment or I'm at the computer and want to watch a thread.
Otherwise, I prefer the Web based reader. It's more convenient for me to use.
And, as I said, I've never experienced any problems with it.

Hello, Are there pop-up stoppers enabled?
I had to turn off my pop-up stoppers.
I am using Firefox browser today and have "notify me of replies" checked.
Have not requested this service for several days, last time I did "using
IE7" I received notification via e-mail.
take care.

Checking on the ability to receive an e-mail reply.

Beamish,

Thank you for your interest and reply. I do have Popup's blocked. But I
always have had them blocked and the Notification process always worked
before three days ago. I'm using AOL which actually is IE 6 as a browser. I
do appreciate your suggestion though.

Thanks,
Milt

Hello,
"Notify me of replies" works here with both browsers.
Try a different browser if it works then you have isolated the problem to
your browser.
Then perhaps if there is a ability to repair the browser in "Add & Remove".
If not then a "System Restore".
The other possibillity, have there been any updates?
take care.
beamish.

Beamish,

Thank you for trying the "Notify me" feature and letting me it worked for
you. That leaves me more confusedl.

Also, thanks for the thought. I did try another browser. I also tried another
computer. I'm still seeing the same problem.

As far as updates, I did take the 13 M/S updates on Feb. 14, but I didn't
become aware of this problem until Feb. 20.

Hello,
Yes your reply leaves me confused.
Are both computers using AOL?
Look for a commonality between both units.
take care.

Beamish,

Actually, I have three computers networked here. All three can use AOL or
Comcast. I can use Internet Explorer or AOL's browser on each of them. One is
Windows XP Home SP2 and two are Windows Millenium. All three go through
either a Netgear router/gateway with a hardware firewall or a Winmodem. The
XP machine has Norton AV 2006. The other two have Grishoft AVG. The XP
machine uses a Windows firewall. The other two do not have firewalls.

All three machines exhibit the same problem. I suspect that the problem is
related to the .net passport on Microsoft's server system. I say "I suspect,
I'm not certain. I just can't relate it to anything else that I know about.

Once again, I thank you for your interest. If you can suggest anything else,
I will be very pleased to look into it.

Hello,
Suggest you give some consideration to installing Firefox browser and
Ofbyone browser. These may give you access to "Notify me of replies". If so
then this may indicate a browser problem.
I used backup unit with Firefox browser, had no problem using the web based
newsreader site.
Have two units, use cable isp with Toshiba modem and d-link router. Both
units have Windows XP Home SP2, all updates.
I use Microsoft's IE7 as the default browser and the freestanding browsers
for backup.
Sometimes the original problem, which should clear upon closing and opening
the browser or rebooting becomes locked-in.
There maybe a setting or a registry adjustment that repairs this problem, I
do not know.
Last time something like this happened to one of my units, after several
days of searching for an answer, the only answer was to update the browser
and the problem dissappeared. Never did find a real solution.
take care.
