Jeff

OK, I saw the XPCleaner on another thread about Jastek.net. I decided to use
it as I was looking for a cleanup utility for IE. First let me say that you
(whoever) might have had success with it but this is my experience as of
yesterday.

1. During install it deleted system32/cmd.exe from the bootfile and replaced
it with its own version. (As best I can tell, thats what it did), now it
shows cmd.exe missing, then I have to bypass to get to the splash screen
where it runs cmd.exe and triggers the message "unable to load
system32/cmd.exe it is being used by another program.

2. It triggered a Norton "Malicious Software" message. Like a dummy, I
bypassed it and continued on.

3. It DOES NOT clean up IE. So far the only thing I can see that it does is
delete all the message bodies from Usenet posts. I can see all the headers
but none of the message bodies.

4. It has slowed everything down considerably. Where boot time used to be
about 2 minutes (I have a lot of software loaded on that particular laptop),
boot time has been increased to about 8 minutes.

5. Unistall does not work. It has the option but when you click on it, it
does not uninstall. Also, it does not show up in Programs in the control
panel, so you wont be deleting that way either.

Like I said, others may have had success with this particular program, for
me though, this is my experience.

I am using WinXP HE, 3.1 Ghz Intel processor and a gig of ram.

Has anyone else had this experience and how did you fix it short of
reinstalling? I have cleaned the registry, run ad-aware, Spyware detector
and done a NA scan and tried unstalling manually. It will not allow any of
the files to be uninstalled manually because they are all in use by
"another" program.

We haven't. Where exactly did you download it from?

It was my original message that started this discussion. I found
XPCleaner at:
http://www.jastek.net/pro.php
Naturally the developer doesn't mention any of the nasty things that
Jeff did. Based on his post, I'll give it a miss. Many thanks to the
group for your responses and help.

Accesories-->System Tools-->System Restore should take care of it.

I have not had any of these problems with it - only issue I have is
that it seems very powerful, and sometimes deletes cookies I would
rather leave - but this is just because I have not gone into detail
and told it which ones I want it to leave

Deleting posts on usenet seems strange - I will have a look at its
options again and post back if I find anything helpful

oops = wrong programme - I was talking about ccleaner - so sorry :-)

Good luck !

I wrote XPCleaner and it has been downloaded from my website many, many
times (10,000 +) with no problems reported to me.

The program does not delete cmd.exe but infact uses it.
So you may have seen it pop up and think it was being deleted.

The uninstall file is in ....
"C:\Program Files\XPcleaner\"

And should work ok.
I have virus scanned and tested the program based on this post just to make
sure it did not get messed up on the webserver and it works fine here.

I am not sure what caused your problem but feel free to contact me here...
http://www.jastek.net/contact.php

If you can not get it uninstalled ok and I can try and walk you through it.

Based on the information in this thread I have added the Jastek site to my
hosts file. Before doing so, I had a look at the description of XPCleaner,
and it seems to do nothing which cannot be done safely with CCleaner, which
is available at: http://www.ccleaner.com/ or
http://www.snapfiles.com/get/ccleaner.html .

In addition to the other suggestions, you might be able to remove the files
"in use" with Unlocker, at: http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker/ .

Before installing any program, but especially programs which affect the
system operation, I recommend that you back up the registry file with Erunt
( http://www.larshederer.homepage.t-online.de/erunt/erunt/ ) and set a
Restore Point.

I agree with your recommendation of CCleaner - but have googled XP
Cleaner and have not seen reports of problems like the OP posted.

Think it is premature to block the jastek site in your hosts file - it
may not be perfect, but seems to me at least as an honest attempt at
writing freeware......

I benefit from lots of freeware authors - I would hate to malign a
software writer based on one report - can you find others reporting
problems ? Or did I miss something ?

Thank you for your comments about not trashing a freeware software program
based on one report.

I posted a reply on here today offering the person help fixing his problem.
And he can still contact me if he needs help.

I wrote and released the program back in 2003 and have had nothing but good
comments about it.
It was featured at one point in a bootdisk.com newsletter and on other
websites.

While I am sorry that somebody may have had a problem with my program.
I think black listing my site takes things just a bit far.

As somebody who has used computers for over 30 years I have had programs
mess up on me too.
But I do not place blame on the author who has spent his time trying to make
something that's useful to a great
number of people.

Everybody's system is different and to make a program that works on "most"
systems is hard enough.
Then you add in other programs that may not work well with "the" program.
Different user setups ect and you can end up with almost anything happing.

Based on the post here I did install the program again after downloading it
from my site and have tested it on other machines.
Just incase by chance it got messed up on the web server somehow.

If I had found something wrong with it or had more then one report then I
would be more then happy to pull it from my site.
But as my logs show it is still being downloaded often even after 2 years
and with no problems reported to me in person or even looking through a
google search I'll keep it on the site for now.

Thanks to all...

It was not my intention to malign anyone, merely an attempt to point the OP
in the direction of a tried and trusted alternative (CCleaner) while at the
same time ensuring that I do not at some later date download a program which
has been reported as causing difficulties. I did attempt a search and could
not find any other reports, good or bad, but a search for "xp cleaner" was
confusing due to the multitude of URLs this turns up, including several
payware programs with the same name. If anyone wishes to recommend any of
the programs offered on this site I'm sure they will do so. For myself, I
prefer to adopt a cautious attitude.
