Matias

I'm looking for a free (obviously) AntiVirus program that includes an
on-access real-time scanner, automatic updating, and the ability to run
via the command line for scheduling use.

The reason I'm asking is I do a bit of Technical Support on the side,
and it's easier for most of my customers if I set it and they don't have
to worry about running it, updating it, etc.

TIA

AVG Free Edition is the well-known anti-virus protection tool. AVG Free
is available free-of-charge to home users for the life of the product!
Rapid virus database updates are available for the lifetime of the
product, thereby providing the high-level of detection capability that
millions of users around the world trust to protect their computers. AVG
Free is easy-to-use and will not slow your system down (low system
resource requirements).

Highlights include:

- Automatic update functionality
- The AVG Resident Shield, which provides real-time protection as files
are opened and programs are run
- The AVG E-mail Scanner, which protects your e-mail
- The AVG On-Demand Scanner, which allows the user to perform scheduled
and manual tests
- Free Virus Database Updates for the lifetime of the product
- AVG Virus Vault for safe handling of infected files
- Great customer satisfaction!

Please note that any previous version of AVG Free will be un-installed
automatically during the installation of the new AVG Free.

Mel,

Thanks. I've tried AVG before but I'm willing to give it another look.
The interface for AVG never really seemed all that intuitive to me.
I'll look again. Thank you.

I use AVG as the other poster mentioned, but I have heard good things
about Avast:

Troy,

I've tried avast! which unfortunately does not include a command-line
scanner or the ability to schedule scans from within. Thanks.

Doh, sorry I didn't see that requirement. Maybe one free package to do
all that is asking too much. F-prot has a free dos antivirus for home
use. As does Avast!

Ultimate Boot CD includes it - handy tool for tech support if you don't
have already:

I can highly recommend F-prot. Been using the DOS version for many, many
months and loved it. Got a new (more powerful) PC recently so I am using
the free trial GUI version. I know I'll pay the 20'ish euro's.

AFAIK the DOS version doesn't have autoupdate - sorry.

Troy,

Not a problem. F-prot's included in the UBCD. I have version 3.2 and
am slowly in the process of downloading version 3.3

I ran across BitDefender and am downloading it now. It seems like it
may fit the bill. Thanks again!

Just looked at AVG (an early 7 version, will download the current
version shortly). The interface isn't a bad as I remembered. hmmmm.
Will look into it further (once I finish downloading the most recent
version).

How did BitDefender go? Worth me looking at over AVG? AVG Free doesn't
allow much flexibility in scheduling etc. Does B-D?

Troy,

I'm still looking at BitDefender. It's too early for me to have a
definitive opinion yet, but I'll post back when I do (should be sometime
this weekend).

From the little I've looked at BD, it does seem to have more extensive
scheduling capabilities. But, like I said, I haven't had time to play
with it and see what it's really like yet.

AVG Free Rescue Disk

Rescue Disk is an indispensable tool that can save you in the event of
damage to system areas or virus infection that cannot be remedied within
the Microsoft Windows environment.
Rescue Disk enables you remove viruses or restore system areas using the
MS-DOS environment. It includes a DOS version of the AVG Free, a backup
of system areas, and the system files which allow the computer to be
started from the diskette (creating a "system" diskette).
When creating a backup of system areas, you can change its name and give
it a description. Next you can select where to save it, on a diskette in
drive A: or any other folder on your system. You can also format the
diskette.
When the wizard is finished, AVG Free will create the Rescue Disk (you
may be prompted for multiple empty diskettes).

The command line scanner is AVG.EXE, and it's in the folder with the rest of
AVG.

Well, I think I've decided on AntiVir PE Classic.
http://www.free-av.com/ It includes automatic updating, command line
operation, and on-access scanning.

Don't mean to do any comercials, but then, theres no one who is going to
earn any money from it. I have used Avast Antivirus-Personal for like 5
years, and have never had a single virus. When i have gotten to any of
the online virus-checking pages on the web, i'm always clean.
And it is a small application, that really don't need much resources out
of your system, and suport many, if not all, of the comonly used
security protocols. It even has a built in e-mail-scanner, active
file-access-scanner and scanning of files transfered over the internet.
