I ordered a new HD and XP Pro CD (valid Full windows cd w/key and
etc.)from Newegg.com and it will not up-grade my win2000 pro install
thats running right now. When trying ti install, It wants to install
fresh or in a new folder but not upgrade.

Needless to say, I've made so many personal settings and software over
the years that a fresh install will take me weeks if not months to get
back to where I am now using win2000.

Is there any work around for this or do I have to go back-wards to a
up-grade CD in order to go forward??

Regards
Jay

Actually, going to Win 2000 is going backwards. What you do is upgrade from
Win 2000 to XP. The upgrade is supposed to retain all of your settings, but
it pays to back these things up anyway,
Jim

Apparently, you purchased an "OEM Version" of Windows XP
which will not upgrade over an older Windows operating system.
In order to upgrade over Windows 2000, you need to purchase
a "Retail Upgrade Version" of Windows XP Professional.

Example:

Microsoft Windows XP Professional Upgrade with SP2 - Retail

OEM versions can't do an upgrade, only a clean install.

It sounds as if you purchased an OEM license for WinXP. OEM CDs cannot
perform upgrades. If you want to upgrade, you'll need to purchase
either the full or Upgrade retail license.

To my knowledge, windows 2000 is not eligible for an upgrade to XP. Only
98SE, ME

You know, there's an awful of questions about
upgrading to XP and upgrading from Home
and 2000 to Pro. I'm coming to the conclusion
that it would be best for all concerned if
Microsoft simply did away with the OEM
designation for the next OS. And OEM
manufacturers should be forced to
provide OS discs with their products.
And I'm fed up with Activation, too.
There has to be a better way to resolve
this mess. Guess I'm just grouchy today.

Have learned one thing from scanning this
forum and that is that I won't buy another
OEM OS disc from a supplier. Retail
only!

As others have said, it appears that you have purchased an OEM version
of XP Pro, which will not do an upgrade install.

Your best option for salvaging what you have would be to:

1. Use the Files And Settings Tranfer Wizard from the XP Pro CD to
save your user data files and program configuration settings from
Windows 2000 to another hard drive partition, a network drive, or a
removable backup device (CD Burner etc).

2. Format the hard drive and install your XP Pro clean on the empty
hard drive.

3. Once Pro is installed run FASTW again to import the saved data and
configuration settings.

You will still have to reinstall all of your application programs, but
using FASTW does make the process somewhat faster and less painful as
you have fewer worries about data files and configurations.

MVP Gary Woodruff has written an article on using FASTW which you will
find at http://www.aumha.org/win5/a/fast.htm

Another option would be to install your new XP Pro OEM version on a
separate hard drive/partition from the Windows 2000. That would give
you a multi-boot setup so you could boot into Windows 2000 when needed
to run those apps which you have not yet reinstalled into your XP.

Good luck
