I want to pull out an old xp1800 (1.533ghz), and put in a xp2600 (KV4D 512kb
L2 cahce - 1917mhz),
....how's the existing XP Home install (OEM i.e. can't repair or over
install) going to like that ?

Tips pretty please.

TIA, Richard

Usually a change of cpu has no impact on a win OEM installation, that being
said its allways possible some OEM suppliers may lock their installation
down.

Thanks DL, all my distant memories (from when I used to extensively fiddle
with hardware!) were telling me that there shouldn't be any issues, I have
changed cpu's on XP platforms quite a lot in the past but, then I started
thinking back to W98 and how it used to set a lot of timings accroding with
cpu clock speed / fsb etc. i.e. one used to have to at the least
over-install or reinstall with W98 but, anyway the box I'm gonna swap cpu's
in, is XP Home edition OEM.

The OS won't care, but if the motherboard isn't designed to handle that much
of an increase in speed, it may fail miserably, especially if it's already
borderline, which some no-name PCs are. It may or may not work, real world
answering here. But if there are any problems, it'll be the hardware, not
the software or OS.

Thanks all, DL, Haggis, Poprivet and Puffnstuff,
Tthe bios knows all about them to right to the top xp3200 - so the xp2600
should go in ok
....I was just getting a bit rusty, ...along with my old PC's :-)
