want to change default BULLETS back to dots

the default bullet that pops up is the empty square

it is getting really annoying to have to go to "insert" "symbol" and click on the dot and then "insert" and "close" each time i want to add a bullet

grrrrr...

please help
 
Have you tried selecting the first pane in Format | Bullets and Numbering
and pressing the Reset button?
