Is there a way to cancel access to a domain ?

This is a used computer with XP Pro and it was accessing a domain. Now, as a
stand alone computer, I would like to set up a home lan but when I start the
home/office network wizard, I get an error message that as I'm on a domain,
I can't modify network settings.

Any idea?

You can on right click on My Computer select Computer Name then Change
button.
Yhere you can change domain or workgroup, you select workgroup

right click 'my computer'-->properties->selekt network identification
-->select workgroup instead of domain and relogin.

I find it hard to fathom that the machine was not wiped before being sold.
Wipe the system and put a clean installation on it, the company's version
may restrict you from having sufficient access to make system changes and
will eventually hamstring you anyways.

Before you take it off the domain make sure you have a valid local logon or
local admin password.

Holy mackeral!! You're using a machine from another environment???
How do you it isn't full of bugs, virii, malware, spyware, adware ..
et al, et al.

Wipe it and do a clean install of Windows and your won software.

With second-hand computers, especially if acquired from strangers
but perhaps even if acquired from a family member or friend, your wisest
course of action would probably be to format the hard drives and start
fresh. You don't want to get in trouble because the original owner may
have filled the hard drive with kiddie porn, or have problems because
the original owner downloaded/installed viruses or other malware.

However, to remove the computer from the domain, simply login using the
built-in Administrator account and add the computer to the workgroup of
your choice. Be advised that any data stored within the user profiles
of domain accounts will become unavailable.
