Wallpaper hijack, virus? Or maybe some important system file deleted?

When I was working on my computer
all of a sudden I had the blue screen of death. After I rebooted the
wallpaper disappeared. I went into Display Properties and saw all
backgrounds were grayed out and the slider didn't move. I tried to install a
wallpaper from a third party software (ThumbPlus) but nothing happened. The
funny thing is when I turn my computer off the wallpaper I tried to install
with ThumbPlus shows up for a second just before the computer is off. I
think maybe I got some kind of virus that hijacked my desktop.
Unfortunately, neither Norton nor Kaspersky turn up any viruses.
Please help if you know what may be going on here.

go into safe mode, unistall that program, delete the program files, search
and destroy any .scr files for it too. go into run>msconfig and remove any
entries that are related to that screensaver and or manufacturer...

Thanks, man. Actually, all I had to do is run Ad-Aware and wack the SpySerif
virus. After that I had to delete a couple of entries in the Registry
related to the wallpaper.
