all that appears in the picture frames are magnifing glasses like the search
icon, any way of restoring them?

Something vaguely similar happend to a friend, who uses Windows XP.

An image has appeared overlaid on his wallpaper, and nothing can get rid of
it.

Right clicking brings up the same thing one gets by clicking on the actual
desktop.

Various things have been tried to get rid of it, nothing succeeds. Last
thing we tried
was a system restore, which reduced it to a small red cross in a box. Before
we
contact the Vatican for exorcism, I appeal for help!

It may have appeared while calling up an article from a Google taskbar.

I know this isn't the right newsgroup, but does anyone know if there is a
better
one for Windows XP? Can't find one in my list ...

There are many newsgroups for Windows XP. See the link below for a listing
of all the MS public newsgroups.

Your friend needs to run a Smitfraud remover if he hasn't done so already.

That should take care of the image, but if it doesn't (or the computer is
really clean but this effect was left behind):

Here's how to get rid of the desktop warning being displayed by malware. Go
to the Display applet in Control Panel and look on the Desktop tab. Click
on Customize Desktop, and then click on the Web tab. You will see that
there are checkmarks next to "My Current Home Page" and probably "Lock
Desktop Items". Uncheck these. By highlighting the "My Current Home Page"
and clicking on the Properties button, you will be able to determine the
name of the file that is the message. It might be called something like
"security.html" or the like.

Click Apply and OK out when you've made your changes. Then you want to find
the *.html malware file and delete it.
