I've tried everything, and about give up upgrading W98 to XP. One last
shot may be FDISK and start over. I already know Upgrade Advisor doesn't
like the version of Backup Exec I have on W98, so if I use the backup
utility that comes with W98 (which I believe to be Backup Exec Lite)
will the backup utility in XP be able to read the tape to restore the
data files from?
Thanks,
Dave

But there won't be any files and settings to transfer after I FDISK!
That's why I was going to backup first. (I'm not all that worried about
the settings, but it would take a pretty good stack of CD's to save all
my data files.) But now it doesn't seem to matter anyway, because even
FDISK won't run anymore! I'm beginning to think MickeySoft has sabotaged
my computer or something, this just keeps going from bad to worse to
worser. Setup won't run, it won't reboot without trying to resume the
setup that won't run, even though I've repeatedly F8=>Return to last
known good configuration, on next reboot I have to intercept and F8
again. Now it won't boot from floppy or CD, even though I've double- and
tripple- checked BIOS settings to boot from floppy first, CD second,
then hard drive. When I finally got it booted to a command prompt and
tried to FDISK, it warned me that I had a drive larger than 512MB, and
asked if I wanted to enable large drive support, then immediately
returned to command prompt without FDISKing. I'm running out of ideas,
short of burning it and starting over. I think I have an old TV tube
degaussing coil out in the garage, maybe I could pass the hard drive
through it and start over.
