hi

i have been testing a vpn connection between 2 XP pro machines (my laptop
and desktop). When i vpn in from my laptop (via a dial up) to my broadband
desktop i find that i can only browse the shares when i use the private ip
of the desktop then the share name, e.g. \\192.168.0.x\share rather than
\\machine\share then i find i can't browse the rest of the network, i have
another 3 machines in a peer to peer, even with IP\share.
i have a dlink router on the front of the network with built in fire wall. I
assumed that if it allowed the VPN to pass thru that there would be no need
to open netbios ports (which i dont want to do) to allow the browse by name
function. netbios over tcp/ip is enabled also.
anyone give me any ideas?

thanks in advance

Name resolution over VPN links is somewhat problematic. The only way
that I can get \\machinename\share to work every time is when I use a
WINS server (which will also allow browsing). Otherwise, I have
noticed that using the \\machinename converntion works about 50% of
the time (in my experiments).
