kev

ive got a VPN set up between 2 computers over the internet using XP's
built in VPN software.

my setup

server system:
XP HOME edition
DSL connection through a westell dsl modem

client system:
XP PRO
cable internet connection through a belkin router.

I can connect to the server system fine meaning I can see the connection
icon in the lower right corner of my screen telling me its connected.
but I cant seem to find out how to see the shares i have set up on the
server system or use the printer on the server system. I try to manually
add the network place but it still cant find the computer or the shares.

one more problem is that the connection is dropped for no apparent
reason after about 2 minutes.

can anyone help?

there are two issues here. 1. can you ping the host's private ip? If not,
post the result of ipconfig /all.
2. quoted from http://www.chicagotech.net

VPN XP Client Disconnects After One Minute
SYMPTOMS: After you install SP1 for XP, your computer may drop VPN
connections after about 55 seconds. This behavior may occur if ICS/ICF is
enabled.
RESOLUTION: 1) disable ICS. 2) disable ICF. 3) contact Microsoft Product
Support Services to obtain the fix.

hello Robert, thanks for the help. I cant ping the prvate IP . after
running ipconfig /all I think I know why.

1- the private ip assigned to the server from the server side is
192.168.1.97.

2- the ip address for the server when doing ipconfig /all (while
connected from the client machine)is 192.168.1.96

3- the ip address for the server when looking at the connection details
tab from the icon in the notification area while connected is 192.168.1.95

4- the subnet mask listed in ipconfig /all is 255.255.255.255, which is
a broadcast address. and should be 255.255.255.0.

5- the default gateway is the same as the ip address(192.168.1.96)and
should be 192.168.1.254.

I cant ping any of the 3 server IP addresses. why am i getting 3
different IP address for the server machine?

here is the output of ipconfig /all
