This maybe a DNS issue, we has a similar problem on our network, we had
outlook on the client configuered to connect to exchange aswell and this did
not work.

We had to modify the "host" file on the client with the host name and IP
address's so they could manage thier own resolution. this is a simple
process, basicly search the client HDD for "hosts" its most likely in the
system32/drivers directory, open the file with a plain text editor like
notpad and follow the instructions.

This problem occured with us because we were using a hardware VPN
gateway/firewall which didnt alow the transfer of DNS details, so the client
would try and connect to "server1" and the fire wall would only recognise a
connection request of the IP address of this server.

once the host file is modified the client automaticly axchanges the name for
the IP before communicating with the server.

Cheers, Rob
