VPN passthrough going to Windows XP box

I have a Windows XP machine setup to accept VPN connections. This
machine is behind an ActionTec R1524SU DSL router (which has PPTP VPN
pass through turned on by default). I can connect to this machine fine
if the Windows XP machine I am trying to connect to is in the DMZ of
the router. If I try to just forward TCP port 1723 I get a long pause
at Varifying Username and Password then finally get an Error 721. It
works fine on the local LAN. The router has been replaced once.

What am I doing (or not doing) wrong?

1723 and gre, protocol 47, which should be your PPTP passthrough are all
that are needed for PPTP connections.

If you are on the most current firmware for the router, I'd say something's
broken--this should work.
