VPN - I can't solve this one!

I'll give $25 to whoever solves this one!

My VPN connection consistenly drops after 3 minutes. I've timed it with a
stop watch and it is always at the exact minute. It goes from 2:59 to 3:00
and like clockwork (literally) to drops. Sometimes it has been 2 minutes,
sometimes 4, but always right on the minute. About 90% of the time it has
been 3 minutes.

Now I only have this problem when I'm using a router. However, I've used 4
routers, 3 different models, from 2 different companies!! Always the same.

I've scowered (sp?) the internet looking for the answer. I've tried
disabling all firewalls. I've lowered my MTUs. I've search for hotfixes.
I've got XP SP2 installed and all the KB articles say problems like this
should be fixed in SP2. I've checked the versions of my files that the
different KBs reference.

I've got 3 different VPNs into different clients. All 3 VPNs experience
this problem so it isnt' the VPN. I've been using them for several months
and one of them for a year+ with no problem until last Monday. Not sure what
happened last Monday. We did have a thunderstorm. Soooooooo. I've replaced
all my surge protectors and my network cables too.

What do I do? I'm at my wit's end? My hair is gone. My teeth are gray.
Can some one help me anyone?

Oh yeah, I've spent about 5 hours on support calls with my various router
makers and my ISP. I even called MS support, but the guy had never even
heard of a VPN. And that was the Pro IT line!

Of course, what am I complaining about when there are millions of people
that would love to have my pidily little problems.

Anyone have suggestions? :-)

Thanks,

Justin

Well, I hope I can be a help to someone else. Because after wasting who
knows how many hours of my life I think I've found the problem. At least,
I've been connected to one VPN for 42 minutes and the other just passed 4,
which was the record before.

If you want to know the answer just pay me $25 and I'll... just kidding. :-)

So, it turns out my DSL modem has it's own admin pages (like a router) @
192.168.0.1 and in that configuration I had put my DSL username and password
to connect. Then in my router I had *also* put the username and password so
my router was trying to continually connect while at the same time my DSL
modem was doing the same.

Now, I'm not sure why this caused the problem but as soon as I reset my DSL
modem to no longer do that and only set my router to use the username and
password it seems to be working. (I just completely reset the modem)

I'm thinking it has something to do with the timing of the packets and
establishing connections? Or maybe the DSL modem doesn't allow a continual
connection? No idea, really.

If anyone has any ideas I'm still open to hearing them.

Thanks,

Justin
