Volume Shadow Copy Service?

I'm seeing errors due to 'Volume Shadow Copy Service' in my Event
Viewer, Can someone please explain what this service does, and whether
I really need it enabled on a WinXP Home, standalone PC?

Thank you. The second of those is certainly comprehensive, but can't
say I really understand it!

Bur I *think* it must be needed by my backup program, SecondCopy. At
least, when I disabled VSS, the icon for SecondCopy no longer appeared
in the system tray on boot up, so I re-enabled it and set it to manual
as suggested in the first of those sites.
