Have you re-installed your sound drivers either from the motherboard CD or from a third party driver CD? They are not included with your OS CD. If you have they're easy to turn on.
Open Sounds and Audio Devices in Control Panel. First click on the Audio tab. It should show you what device you have installed for sound, such as SoundMAX Digital Audio. If you have a device for sound click back on the Volume tab and click on 'Place Volume icon in the taskbar'. Once the Volume icon is showing make sure it is turned up and then do a sound check by selecting a default window sound listed under the Sound tab.
