Volume icon?

The volume icon in the system tray near the clock playes hide and seek
with me. Sometimes it is there and sometimes it is not there?
The sound and audio devices properties dialoge from the control panel
shows "place volume icon in the taskbar" as checked.

Also "Hide inactive icons" in the Taskbar and Start Menu Properties
dialoge shows the item unchecked.

winxp home edition.P4 2.6GhZ RAM 256MB.
