Volume icon problem

Contol Panel-open sound and audio devices and it shows
"place volume icon in the taskbar" is checked.
BUT the icon is not there. Uncheck- apply, recheck -apply
ok and it is there. A couple of restarts later it is gone from
the taskbar but still checked.
Appreciate any inputs to correct this.
Using Windows XP Pro and sound chip on the motherboard.

I get the same after updates that I guess are changing

sound; last one being trial of Windvd 5 platinum.
If it's happening outside of this for you hope you get an
answer.
