When I click the sound icon to move to the taskbar, it says that it's not
installed. I can turn the sound on and off, but I have to go to control panel
all the time. How do I reinstall the volume icon?

Thank you, I'm trying not to make this too long.

Go to Control Panel. Select "Sounds, Speech and Audio Devices". Then select
"Sounds and Audio devices". You will see a checkbox for placing volume
control on the task bar.

That's exactly what I did, but it says that it's not installed. I must have
removed the icon when I was removing some programs I didn't want.

As I said before, I have sound, I just have to go to control panel every
time and it's annoying.

What should I do?

How do I reinstall 'sndvol32.exe'?

I don't have a recovery disk.

Blink do you see an i386 directory on your machine (C:\i386)? If so try
this. Look for the sndvol32.exe file there. Drag / copy (don't move) this
file to the c:windows\system32 folder.

Not sure if this will work, but thats where the file belongs.

If the above doesn't work try this. Open command prompt (start, run,CMD).
Type CD C:\i386 and hit enter. Type expand sndvol32.exe c:\windows\system32
and hit enter.

Blink in my i386 folder the files are already uncompressed. I tried it and
it worked fine for me. Maybe yours are still compressed. What is the
extension on the sndvol32 file in i386 look like? If it is sndvol32.ex_ ,
try this:

Get back to dos prompt and the i386 directory. Then type:

expand sndvol32.ex_ c:\windows\system32\sndvol32.exe (hit enter)

Blink, one more thing to insure we are not ovelooking the right way to do
this.

Open Add\Remove Programs from control panel. Click on the Add\Remove
Windows Components button in the left hand column. Select Accessories and
Utilities and click the details button. Do you see a "Multimedia" item? If
so select it and again click the details button. You should see a Volume
Control item which can be selected and installed from here.

The "Multimedia" folder may be hidden from you. If so Let me know and I will
help you navigate to a web link that explains how to get it back.

I'll be gone for several hours. I'll check back when I return.

I messed up the syntax above should be:
expand sndvol32.ex_ c:\windows\system32

Blink I'm sorry for all this back and forth. The syntax should be:

expand sndvol32.ex_ c:\windows\system32\sndvol32.exe.

I had it right the first time.

Hi Blink,

You should be able to go to ]Add/Remove] and then choose Window
Components. If you have an i386 directory the files will load from
there.

Hi Blink,

The correct command line syntax is;

expand sndvol32.ex_ c:\windows\system32

Note the underscore at the end of the sndvol32 file name.
