volume control

i am having a problem hearing sound from my speakers..i have taken the volume control panel to the highest possible place but i still hav to press my ear agianst just to hear it, thats how quiet it is.. do have any suggestions( cost-free preferably) as to what i can do to fix my problem
 
Do you have any additional sound software installed? SoundBlaster ?
This and others have separate volume controls. There is also more sound
volume controls in the XP software . Jym

Do you have Yahoo messenger? When I use yahoo messenger with the sound down
and then close it, my volume on all other things are low! I have to re open
yahoo messenger and turn up the volume there.. Just a thought..
