Is there a way to prevent the Volume icon in the
notification area (tray) from disappearing?
It is available at times, then the next time I boot my
system, it is not there, yet it is set to display in the
control panel.

Right-click an empty area of the notification area and choose "customize
notifications...". Select the volume icon and choose "always show".
