Volume control missing on my laptop

My volume control icon has disappeared. I've gone into the control panel and
tried to check display volume control with no luck. I receive a message
telling me to go back to the control panel and select this option from there.
I have a feeling there is a driver of program that is missing. I'm
operating off of a laptop and do not have my XP disk for additional guidance.

What shows as you Default Device in Control Panel > Sounds applet > Audio tab?
Is your device listed and are there any conflicts showing in Device Manager > Sound,
Video and Game Controllers?
Are there any Unknown or Other devices listed in Device Manager?

The default device is Realtek AC97. I'm seeing conflicts in a network
adapter (Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC) and another in PCMCIA
adapters (generic cardbus controller)

As for the question about is the device listed and conflicts present: yes,
it is listed, but no conflicts present. There are no unknown devices listed.

Your questions did make me think about downloading the drivers for these
devices again. Good idea or bad idea???

I've already been to that support site. Unfortunately, I don't have my XP
disk because it was already loaded on my laptop and did not come with the
disk. Is there any way to download/ receive the sndvol32.exe file that is
referenced and get it installed?

Go to the manufacturers site an download the latest updated drivers and install
them per their instructions.
Once you have the drivers and before you install them, boot to Safe Mode and go
through the devices and remove any/all Audio and NIC listed.
You may want to check other devices as well which may have duplicate entries and
can/may be corrupt. There are some devices which will have duplicates that which is
the norm and there's no need to remove them.

You may need to have the XP disk, at the least the i386 folder on hand in case it's
asked for during the install.

See if there is a folder named i386 in the Windows folder. It contains all the system files in a compressed form. Also check the %Windir%\ServicePackFiles\i386 folder, which contains the latest version of system files, if you've applied a Service Pack seperately (i.e, on top of existing installation).
