So, I'm an idiot and anal retentive, but here's my problem:
I have preset buttons on my laptop to turn up the volume on
my computer. Until recently when I did this a little volume
bar would appear above the toolbar on the bottom right
corner of my screen. Now I can still change the volume with
the buttons, but I somehow must have disabled the bar, so I
can't see what volume I'm at. Although minor, it's been
pissing the hell out of me and I don't know how to fix it.
I'm running Windows XP on a Dell. Thanks for the help

Volume Control - The volume icon does not appear in the
notification area (system tray)

Make sure Hide Inactive is disabled in Taskbar
Properties. In Sound and Audio Devices Properties, make
sure "Place volume icon in the taskbar" is checked. If it
still doesn't work, here are two workarounds:

Go to Start/Log off (log off then log back on).
Right-click the taskbar & select Task Manager under
Processes tab select Explorer.Exe & End Task. Under
Applications tab select New Task, type in "explorer" and
click OK.
