When I go to some Webpage and I want to save
the shortcut to the desktop, this happens
usually with some related icon.

But this icon does not last long and soon
disappears to be replaced with the usual
"explorer" icon.

How can I make the propriety icon last
permantly?

Please help, Frank

Web page icons are ephemeral. They reference the original web site via the temporary internet files cache. Clear your cache and the icons are gone. Internet Shortcuts are text files (not so other shortcuts). Open in notepad and change the icon path to where you've saved the icon.

To put an icon back in the cache so it can be found add \favicon.ico after the site name. EG to get google back
http://www.google.com/favicon.ico

Next time you login it will find the icon in the cache and show it.

Thanks this worked. Now I put all these
icons in my "icon" folder.

Frank,

You need to open Windows Explorer, Copy & Paste the below address (replace
'Your Name' first) into the address bar, click 'Go'.

C:\Documents and Settings\Your Name\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files

Locate & right-click the icon, select 'Copy', navigate to somewhere you want
to save the icon, select 'Paste' > Right-click the IE shortcut link on your
desktop, select 'Properties' > select 'Change Icon' > select Browse',
navigate to the location you saved the icon, click it, click OK, OK.
