Hi Keith,

I'm also having a similar problem. Try disabling the
firewall/NAT at both ends.

I'm not sure what causing this, but have found that
disabling the firewall/NAT seems to over come this issue.

I not sure if this a Microsoft voice problem or a issue
with my ISP. I've reported it o my ISP and still waiting
their investigation.

PS - It was all working fine about a month ago!!

David

I am not using any firewalls. I bypassed my Router and I
do not use XP's firewall. I am confused. It works fine
on my wife's laptop that is running Windows 98. And it
worked fine on my old computer that was also running 98.
I didn't have the problem until I got my new machine with
XP Pro on it.

I think you and your wife was using MSN 5 on your Win 98
PC's. I'd too had some issues getting Windows Messenger
4.7 to communicate with MSN 5. I think there may be some
incompat. issues.

Try upgrading your wife's PC to MSN 6 or use MSN 6 at
both ends!!

David

I tried using MSN 6 on my end and MSN 6 on my brothers
end, (who is in a different city). He does not use XP,
but I do. I can still hear him, but he can't hear me.
It's very frustrating.

Thanks,
Keith

Are you able to hear your brother when either of you
initiates the voice chat? Does the chat session ends
automatically after a few seconds?

Yes and both or No and Yes - It may be a firewall or NAT
issue. Make sure your brother does not have a firewall
enabled or check with the ISP to see if they employ NAT
on their network. If he has a firewall, try configuring
the firewall to allow the ports required for MSN (there
somewhere on MS's website).

Yes and No - Get your brother to run the Audio Tuning
Wizard and confirm that the speakers re working.

Maybe a good idea to also re-unstall MSN 6 and re-install
it with the lastest (final) version. This may help.
Also try running Windows Update to apply all recent
updates/patches.

I hope this helps!

David

Yes, I can hear him no matter who starts the conversation.

The chat does not automatically end after a few seconds.
It keeps active until one of us ends the conversation.

My brother does NOT use a firewall.

We are both using different ISP's. But, we have both
used our respective ISP's for months without any
problems. If I use my wife's laptop, I can easily voice
chat with my brother. But when I switch to the new
desktop running XP, the problem starts.

I have re-installed MSN 6 about five times now with no
luck. I have also been using Windows Messenger 4.7 with
the same result.

This worked for me and several friends on window$ XP: (note that the one
that cannot be heard is the one with the problem)

a) if connecting thru a LAN adapter, open connection properties and uncheck
QoS Packet Scheduler.

b) if voice starts but cuts out after a short period of time OR if
connecting thru dialup, (it won't let you uncheck QoS Packet Scheduler)...
set the QoS RSVP service to 'disabled' and reboot.

You can also try un-installing the QoS Packet Scheduler
and re-installing it. (Should be OK enabled)
