Vlookups in EXCEL

Have a workbook with vlookups, takes ages to load over a
33k dialup link, the workbook is only 300k.

Does the each vlookup drag the data from the sheet and
then drop it, there by causing a lot of data transfer???

OR

Is the sheet loaded into memory and any vlookups work
within memory??

vlookups look up data direct from a worksheet unless they
are linked to an external workbook.
