Being curious about Vista, I went to the home page and read all about it.
May be a bit much for my limited puter usage. Question is: Is Vista intended
to supercede XP SP2, or is it an optional program?
Thank you.

Vista is an operating system. It's relationship to XP is the same as XP was
to Windows 2000/98/me/95. There are several Vista newsgroups. I would
suggest you spend some time in microsoft.public.windows.vista.general if you
want info about Vista.

It's the latest operating system from MS. Certainly not a program. Go
back to the home page and read up on each of the five iterations of
Vista to get a better idea of what each version of the OS contains.

WinXP = WinNT 5.1

Vista = WinNT 6

(W2K = WinNT 5)

It's Microsoft's new operating system. It's optional in that if your
computer is operating to your satisfaction under XP, you're certainly
under no obligation to spend a couple of hundred bucks to upgrade.

New computers will come with Vista preinstalled, as time goes on it
will become harder and harder to get a new computer with XP. And
eventually (but not for several years) MS will stop supporting XP. By
that time, your current XP computer might well be driving you crazy
because of the nifty new things that it can't do. That's kind of the
way it's worked before.
