Vista Windows Update - Horribly buggy :-(

For months now, it's been constantly downloading and attempting to install
Visual Studio 2005 Service Pack 1, and bugs me daily that I need to
install it, despite the install failing every time.

Seriously, can somone advise me how to sort this nonsense out, before I go
back to XP for a quiet life?

Should mention x64 Vista....
 
visual studio 2005 is not compatible with vista...

ms cant retain compatiblity with its owb products...let alone everyone elses
lol

go back to xp that is better, faster and more stable... rethink vista after
getting a 4 core machine and service pack 1 at least is out.
 
If you install Visual Studio SP1 from a CD, it seems to work OK. I never
could get the download to install on my 32-bit Vista.

To OP and MVP, how about if you unpack that SP1 download?

There is a tool to unpack various setup files.. I have not tried it with
that download you are talking about, nor have I seen it, but you may want to
try this tool

Try right-clicking on the update and selecting 'Run as administrator' - and
thereafter when you run VS, run it as an administrator (you can alter any
shortcuts to do so under the 'Compatibility' tab).

That's what I had to do. Worked fine after that. However I downloaded it
directly and did not let WU do it.

I find the "Use Microsoft Update" settings to cause problems. For example,
after using it for a few weeks, check for updates and get all that is
presented to you then turn it off. Now check for updates again and more are
presented to you. You're not getting everything you should with that
feature enabled.

<sigh>

1) Some updates must install in a certain order, so they are only
presented to you once you've installed their dependent updates.

2) Some updates are optional, and won't be automatically installed.

I guess you didn't understand me. So let me further explain my steps.

Check for updates and install everything that is presented to you. This
implied there are NO MORE, however if you insist then CHECK FOR UPDATES
AGAIN. In other words keep checking for updates until it wont give you any.
Then uncheck "Use Microsoft Update" and scan again. Gee, more updates.
I've had that happen twice on two different machines. I have a third
machine where it will happen again and I'm waiting for confirmation on a
decent screen recorder for Vista to capture the oddity.

The scary part is that among the updates it wouldn't give me (with "Use
Microsoft Update" checked), Defender signatures was one of them. Which we
all know do not fall under your #1 or #2.

However, this has nothing to do with Vista directly. It's a WU issue alone
however it will affect Vista users.
