No. That's not even remotely anything like what System Restore is for.

No.
Vista replaces the xp operating system, thereby wiping any and all restore
points.
I suggest you purchase software that enable you to make an image of your
current OS, and make a backup before you install Vista.

No, why would you expect system restore to work in an OS when the OS isn't
even on the system anymore? Get drive imaging software, such as Acronis
True Image 10, image the XP installation to an external USB drive. Then do
the upgrade. If you're not happy restore the image.

No. And nor is there an uninstall option for Vista even if installed as an
upgrade over XP. Once Vista is installed, the only way back to XP is to
restore the system from a complete image backup, or format the drive and
install XP clean.

Why does everyone suggest backup imaging?
I prefer a simpler method. Have at least 2 hard drives in the PC. Install
XP on one. Leave XP on it in case you want to go back, and install Vista on
the other one. Set the Vista drive to be the primary drive if you want to
try Vista. Set the other one back to primary if you want to go back to XP.
If you want to keep switching back and forth, try a dual boot.

Why? Because the OP started on the premise that they wanted to upgrade XP
to Vista. Installing Vista on a second drive isn't an upgrade and would
require migrating all data from XP to Vista as well as reinstalling all
applications. Windows Easy Transfer would help with the data, but the
applications would just have to be done manually. For more advanced users,
that is a very good option. But if you don't even understand that Vista is
a whole new OS and the implications of that, then installing a second hard
drive and setting up a dual boot scenario may be more than you can take on.

Here's a question to Easy Transfer...

We have XP on our 2 home computers, can I use the transfer program to
transfer files, etc... to one then do a clean install of Vista to the other
and transfer back what files I want? We want to be selective here on files
transfered back.

Thanks.

For the future, there are Vista newsgroups where you should post this
question. Also best not to post a new question as a reply to someone else's
thread. Start a new thread.

This is the general Vista newsgroup:
microsoft.public.windows.vista.general

In your scenario use WET on the computer you want to upgrade to Vista,
saving the data to USB drive or CD/DVD. Then install Vista run WET on Vista
to migrate the data and settings. Even the two computers are networked I
don't think you can use WET on one computer and store the data on the other
networked computer.
